What IS Instagram?
All right, we’ve heard a ton of fuss from every cell phone user out there both iOS and the Android Users. Both good and bad, iOS users being angry that Android now has Instagram, and Android users just now learning about this app. Instagram’s site declares it as “a fun & quirky way to share your life through a series of photos” Okay well what does that mean? Just another camera? Yes and no, it DOES open up its own camera, but it also allows you to edit them with several filters and other customizations you can share through social mediums such as Facebook and Twitter.
Okay well now that you know about Instagram, lets talk about what happened in early April! Facebook just BOUGHT Instagram, for 1 BILLION dollars. Instagram right now has 30 MILLION users, and people are curious as to why Facebook bought them, well as some believe, they bought Instagram to incorporate the users from Instagram into Facebook and have a single log in point and perhaps merge the photo editing abilities of Instagram into Facebook. Which sounds pretty plausible right?
What’s odd about the whole scenario is a ton of users from Instagram are outraged that Facebook bought Instagram because they believe that Instagram should be it’s OWN social platform, seeing as Instagram has its own comment system and profiles and whatnot. But Facebook buying Instagram shouldn’t change anything in the near future and we cannot see how this will change how Instagram works. As far as Facebook has said, the users currently USING Instagram will experience no change except for the possible INSTANT UPLOAD already featured in Google+
More competition is always good, whether this eliminates competition or just increases the competition between Google and Facebook is still up in the air. What is YOUR opinion? Leave it in the comment section below!
Got Emoji?
I’m sure you’ve downloaded Instagram which has lately been made Available for Android and If so, I’m sure you’ve seen the Unhappy IOS users taunting us fellow Androids.
One of the taunts that crops up often is ‘You’ve got Instagram on Android I feel bad for you Son, we got 99 Emoji’s and you can’t see none’
Well, let’s disprove that shall we? After all this is Android, we can have whatever we like.
Here’s is how;
First Do a Nandroid Backup, as you always should, Disclaimer- I’m not responsible for any problems that are unlikely to occur
1-Download the Following files from your Phone, or computer and move to SD Card
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60301216/Font%20Changer.apk -Font Changer
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60301216/DroidSansArabic.ttf -DroidSansArabic
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60301216/DroidSansFallback.ttf DroidSansFallback
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60301216/DroidSansHebrew.ttf
DroidSansHebrew
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/60301216/EmojiFont.ttf emoji font
Also, ensure you have Root Explorer or Es file Explorer, and you’ll want to download emoji keyboard from Google Play.
2. Install and run the Downloaded Font changer Application once, this will generate a folder called ‘.fontchanger’ (You’ll need to find this)
3. (Optional) Navigate to System/Fonts and make a copy of your font folder and copy it to somewhere safe, as a backup.
4. Navigate to SD card, and copy ‘Emoji.ttf’, Now go to the folder we mentioned earlier ‘.fontchanger’ You want to paste the Emoji file inside that folder.
5. Now one by one, Copy and paste the three remaining fonts to System/font, DroidSansArabic, DroidSansFallback and DroidSansHebrew. (You’ll be prompted to copy over the originals, press yes)
6. Open up the font changer application once again, Press the Emoji font to set it, you will be prompted to Re-boot Re-boot.
You will now be able to see Emoji font note: They will be in Black and white, and you’ll see about 95% of Emoji’s
(Stay posted for a solution to coloured emoji)

Rooted App of the Week: ROM Toolbox
This application has been around for quite some time, we remember using it on the Original Droid, but with all these new awesome phones coming out every day, this application just becomes more and more useful for ANY rooted user! It combines the features from several different rooted apps all into one like Titanium Backup, which you can read our review here, ROM Manager, SetCPU and gives you MANY options to change the most basic of features on your phone such as FONTS and Boot Image changers.
While the in depth features of the Apps like SetCPU and Titanium Backup aren’t there, most users will not notice the differences. You can select you processing speed and governors, and backup all your apps for when you want to flash a new ROM. This is truly a one-stop shop for all of us who flash ROM’s on a daily basis!
One of the best features about this ROM is the ability to change the font of all the text on your phone adding to the personalization of a true rooted phone as well as the ability to change your boot screen with the click of a button! No more having to download 1000 images and hoping they go into the right folder, just click the boot screen you want, and reboot!
There is a free version and a Pro version, as usual, we’d suggest getting the pro version as it unlocks all features PLUS you’re supporting the developers and enabling them to make more applications to make your Android experience that much greater! Check out the link and get to downloading!! Let us know what you think in the comments section or on Facebook/Twitter!
Best Non-Rooted Apps for Backing up Data
So quite often, we get users that are fearful of loosing everything they’ve done before either shipping a phone to be rooted with our excellent Root+Upgrade service, or just have to do a factory reset because their phone is acting quirky. Well fearful readers, this blog is for YOU! Below you’ll find the best apps to backup your Call Log, all of your Texts, and methods to backing up your contacts!
Contacts (Google’s way)
This can be done easily and for most people already done simply by SIGNING IN to their Google Account when they first GET their devices! But for those that want to double check, there are many ways to find out, the most common being to sign in to your Gmail account and selecting “CONTACTS”, you should find them there. If NOT, go to ACCOUNTS AND SYNC under SETTINGS on your device. You’ll see your Google account, click on it and ensure SYNC CONTACTS is CHECKED. If it’s not, CHECK it, and it will start syncing auto-magically. As far as other contacts you probably have, those may be your FACEBOOK contacts so when you do factory reset your device and don’t have the 1,000,000 contacts you had before, just download FACEBOOK FOR ANDROID and you’ll get those contacts back! (Note: Some phones allow you to save contacts to your SD card, just hit the MENU key under your contacts and EXPORT them to your SD card!)
SMS/Call Logs/Contacts
Now you don’t want to lose your text messages or call log for several reason right? Great conversations, proof someone said something to use in a later argument, or just funny stuff! Well there’s an app for you; Super Backup: SMS & Contacts. Yes, “AND CONTACTS” this ONE app, will backup all of your texts, your call logs, AND your contacts, pretty nifty right? Head on over to the Google Play store and check it out, definitely let us know your opinion on the app!
Applications
This is a tricky subject for non-rooted users. While the new Google Play will keep track of ALL purchased apps and now FREE apps you’ve ever downloaded, it won’t keep the DATA of those Apps. Simply put, if you factory reset your device, and you didn’t have that application backed up to your SD card, it won’t remember that you were on level 10 of Angry Birds; you’ll have to start all over again. For those that don’t want to have to download all the apps again because of low signal, or battery, you can download an application called “APP BACKUP & RESTORE”, this will back up the application so you don’t have to re-download it from the store, but again, it won’t back up the DATA of said app. If you want to be able to do that, head on over to our other blog for rooted users.
Keep in mind, all of these apps are for NON-Rooted users, and while here at On The Go Solutions, we love the rooting, we understand peoples fear of losing data and that’s why we suggest backing up your data prior to letting us take care of you! We’re here for you and if you have ANY questions, feel free to leave a comment, or follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook!
Fancy a New Boot Animation? [Video]
So, You’re Rooted, You’ve got a Fancy Custom Rom that you love and wan’t to keep, But you’re bored and want to play around some more with your Android powered Smartphone.
We know how you feel, and that’s why we’re going to help you, starting with changing your BootAnimation.
So here is how:
**Do a Nandroid Backup, it shouldn’t be necesssary, but better to be safe….**
1) Get your BootAnimation of choice from the internet, of course Check XDA in the Themes and Apps section of your Device first, make sure you read the post first.
2)Copy this downloaded .zip file to your SD card on your device and rename it to ‘Bootanimation.zip’ (Some can vary so check, as you can see in the video below mine is ‘htc_bootanimation.zip’)
3) Now, on the phone Navigate to ES file explorer or Root Explorer, ensure you’re mounted as Writeable as you see in the video.
4) Navigate to where your original Boot Animation is located, this may be in Data/local or System/media or in another location depending on your ROM.
5) Rename this Original Boot to Original_Bootanimation.zip so that you can restore to it if you don’t like the new one, now move this to another Location where you can find it easily.
6) Navigate to SD card where you stored the Downloaded Boot Animation, Move it into Data/local or whichever directory yours is as you found out in step 4.
7)Check Permissions are the same as your Original BootAnimations, or set to rw-rw-rw.
8.) Reboot And enjoy.
Or optionally, as you can see in the video, Download BootAnimation changer from google play and use the Preview Function on it instead of having to reboot

How To – ClockworkMod Recovery
Since the beginning of Android, the most widely used program to flash ROM’s has been ClockworkMod. Developed by the popular “Koush”, this application quickly became the number one way users flash, backup, and restore ROM’s. To say that CWM Recovery is packed with features is an understatement and whether you’ve bought a phone from On The Go, or just rooted your phone yourself, you’ll definitely have this program installed and we’re now going to go through the basics of it so you can feel more comfortable flashing ROM’s and in most cases, when you think you’re “bricked” you can just go in here and fix the issue! All right, standard disclaimer, if something goes wrong, On The Go Solutions is NOT held responsible. If you are NOT comfortable flashing ROM’s, don’t do it, we have our service that will do it for you. Check it out!
Intro
Well you should know that most phones have a key combination to get INTO CWM Recovery, and that it’s different for every phone, but usually it’s a combination of the volume keys while holding power. If you’d like to know what your combination is, just hit us up on Facebook and we’ll let you know. Now that we’re booted into CWM, you’ll see all these options that seem pretty self explanatory, but the NUMBER ONE thing you want to do first is create a BACKUP.
Backing Up
1. As you can see in both pictures, to create a backup, you’ll go to “BACKUP AND RESTORE”, or in some versions “NANDROID”.
- 2. Using the volume keys to navigate and the power key to select your option, select “BACKUP” from the menu.
- From there, your system will automatically start backing up. (Note: Sometimes it takes a good 10 minutes for this process to finish, don’t panic if it takes a good while)
Flashing ROM’s
Once your backup is done, you’ll be back at the root menu.
- Be sure you’ve DOWNLOADED the ROM you want along with the associated GOOGLE APPS (commonly referred to as “GAPPS”) Some ROM’s have the
Google Apps already included with the ROM, so if that’s the case, just skip step 6. - Once you’ve ensured you HAVE the ROM’s downloaded on the device (INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD>WHERE EVER YOU SAVED IT), you’ll need to WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET. You’ll be asked if you’re sure, and you’ll select YES.
- Once wiped, you’ll want to “WIPE DALVIK CACHE”. This can be accessed under the “ADVANCED” section of CWM in the root menu; what this does is wipe any kernel information you have installed previously, and is just a generally safe idea to do.
- When BOTH Data/Cache/Dalvik are wiped, you’ll want to “INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD” Once there, go through the directory to where ever you saved the ROM. (It’s usually good practice to just put the ROM on the root of the SD, to prevent searching and confusion.)
- Select the ROM and select YES when asked if you’re sure. Let the CWM do its thing, and also take note this can take a while.
- When the ROM is finished installing, flash the corresponding GAPPS to finish the process, should flash a ton quicker than the ROM did.
- Hit reboot! The first boot ALWAYS takes a good 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the ROM.
Restoring a Working ROM
So you don’t like the ROM you just flashed or the one you flashed has too many bugs! Or worst case, the ROM doesn’t boot!
- Using your phones key combination, you’ll want to boot into CWM.
- Once there, like BACKING UP, you’ll go to “BACKUP AND RESTORE” or “NANDROID”
- Choose the standard “RESTORE” and select the ROM you want to restore, (they’re sorted by date) and just hit “YES” when asked if you’re sure.
- Let it restore, take note that this takes even longer than a backup.
- Hit reboot when it’s finished. You’ll be back to the state you were at before you booted into recovery
Conclusion
So obviously, there is room for a few caveats, which is why, if you DO NOT feel comfortable flashing ROM’s/wiping data, you should not be doing this. So many advantages to flashing ROM’s and if you’ve done this previously, then you know what we’re talking about. Check out our ANY DEVICE upgrade service and have your phone rooted and ROM’ed on the low, only from On The Go Solutions.
